Gaia GPS Classic App Reviews

Great GPS App

Everything you might need in GPS app. My favorite is the ability to download large areas of topos, so you have your maps when you most need them; not just when you have a 3G connection. Update 26-dec-2012: Use it almost everyday! Really like all of the controls for displaying tracks. Also, even installed on my iPad, it is nicer to view and build tracks on it even though it has no GPS.

Both great and frustrating

This app brings to together a great bundle of mapping features and map sources. However, all of the external map sources are frustrating and very difficult to use because theyre rendered in such a way that the details (both text labels and trail lines) are very small and fine and always difficult to see on high resolution ("retina") devices. Zooming in never helps because it re-renders to an even smaller size. Argh!! The only time things are readable is before you release your fingers and it has a chance to redraw. The point of a Retina display is not to render things as small as possible. Please scale your rendering for Retina displays. Or at least provide an option to do so.

On my home screen

Great software. Congrats! GAIA GPS is one of my main go to apps for work and play. It live on my home screen. I use it out in the field for biological surveys, use it for route finding on cross county hikes, use it for recording exceptional campsites or unusual geologic formations, and use it to record and photograph archeological finds. I work with staff from a variety of local, state, and national agencies and frequently use GAIA GPS in the field to illustrate a point. Now many of my colleagues are using the app on their devices for the same purpose. The ability to layer maps, and store high resolution photos makes the pro version worth investing in, but $40 is a steep price to pay. Hopefully the good folks at GAIA will come up with another tier of pricing that allows more folks access to these features.

Great Garmin replacement

Used this app as my sole GPS for a 6 day, 45 mile backpack trip in the Wallowa range in Oregon. Ive gotten totally fed up with Garmins crappy UI and Kafkaesque DRI schemes for their base maps. A friend had his Garmin but had the wrong maps because its so hard to manage them. Gaia came Through like a champ. I downloaded the area we hiked and was able to take the right trail at several junctions that confused others. Then easily uploaded our track to Google Earth for a great screen shot image of the whole trip. Get this app and forget the dedicated GPS crap.

Very good!

If youre looking for a high quality handheld GPS for your iPhone. Stop here, youve found it. Offline is available, it does take lots of memory, but thats to be expected.

My fav mapping and nautical chart app

Great features that work well. I love getting different layers, including nautical charts.

The best for hiking jogging skiing

Ive been using this app for years many times a week. The offline topos are excellent. Also really enjoy the Trip Computer to track cross country skiing and jogging. Thanks for another great update!

Best hiking App

Save your money on hiking gps hand helds. This app does it all right on my iphone! Love it a hikers must have!

Best hiking GPS app for iOS

We have been using Gaia GPS a few times every week for several years now and have a lot of experience with it. It has been a fantastic app for hiking and backpacking from when we first started using it back around 2010, and somehow it just keeps getting better. Very intuitive and well thought out-- there is nothing quirky or difficult about using it. The developer appears to have thought of everything. We find it so much easier and enjoyable to use than dedicated GPS units we have owned that we recently dedicated one of our old iPhones to running Gaia GPS exclusively when we upgraded to newer phones. We always carry a backup map and a quality compass, of course, but after so many hikes over so many years using Gaia with downloaded off-line maps, trust it completely. Definitely worth the very fair price it sells for.

Love it!

My go to app for hiking.

This app kills it!

This is an app for dedicated hikers. It shines in its ability to keep a catalogue of all your hikes and to keep track of secret places you find. The ability to record hikes gives motivation to explore more in addition to making the hike interactive. The ability to use GPS only with offline topo maps is killer! If this was free everyone would have it so dont let the cost deter you from this extremely professionally made app. Invest in what you believe in. Invest in GaiaGPS.

Positive

Very pleased with this for forest service trail riding.

Love it!

I have used Gaia all over the world (New Zealand, USA, Italy...) and I love it! Great maps and easy loading them on my phone. It has "saved my bacon" more than once!! Thanks, Gaia!

The best outdoor app

Best GPS app for exploring the outdoors. Ive tried all the rest and this one is the best. Frequently updating and adding new features. Well worth the price.

Cluttered Mess

View is wildly overcrowded with POIs and other useless junk that, despite what the help file says, cannot be turned off or removed. It claims the "Overlay" menu inside the "Layers" menu allows this, but there is no "Overlay" option in the Layers menu, just a list of the maps available and a "More Layers" selection. App is useless with all the junk cluttering it up. At very least, the help file should reference features that actually exist. Who knows, maybe the feature is hidden somewhere else.

Awesome

Worth the price, best one ever tried. Works excellent and great features.

Very useful - excellent app!

A favorite for hiking...

First impression is quite positive

I tried Gaia GPS out on one hike, and it has been fun so far. There are lots of things you can do and options to explore. I look forward to learning more of its potential.
